The Residential Property Price Index produced by the CSO contains an number of additional indicators. One of these is a breakdown of the type of buyer indicated on Stamp Duty returns, though the Stamp Duty faced by all household buyers is currently the same.
The current CSO series extends back to 2010 when there were just over 10,000 FTBs recorded for the year. The latest figures for the year to March 2026, show the total exceeding 20,000 for the first time since.
The level was around 17,500 up to two years ago and there has been a pretty steady increase since.
By property type, it can be seen that the increase has been driven by FTB purchases of new dwellings, which have risen from 5,000 in annual terms in 2023 to over 7,500 now. FTB purchases of existing dwellings have heldi pretty steady at around 12,500 per annum over the period.
Due to bequests, self-builds and other acquisitions the annual number of first-time owners will exceed the figures shown in the chart.
