Well spotted! It has been corrected.
...Hi Fergus,

Well spotted! It has been corrected.

The official level of unemployment was never nearly 500,000. The current estimate of the labour force from the CSO is 2,122,200. If unemployment was close to 500,000 the unemployment rate would be 23.5%. Wow!

As it is the unemployment rate is 14.1% and the CSO give the number unemployed at 299,000. This is a technical estimate and anyone who has worked at least one hour in the fortnight prior to completing the survey is classed as unemployed.

In a separate question in the QNHS respondents are asked to self classify themselves by the Principle Economic Status (PED):
- At work
- Unemployed
- Student
- Engaged on home duties
- Retired
- Other
In this instance there are 354,000 people who classify themselves as unemployed. These are best measures of the numbers unemployed.

See the QNHS release from the CSO. The first page gives the first numbers I used and the economic status numbers are in Table 10a on page 24.

The number of nearly 500,000 comes from the Live Register and is not an accurate measure of unemployment. It says so on the front page of every Live Register release

"The Live Register is not designed to measure unemployment. It includes part-time workers those who work up to three days a week), seasonal and casual workers entitled to Jobseekers Benefit or Allowance. Unemployment is measured by the Quarterly National Household Survey and the latest estimated number of persons unemployed as of the fourth quarter of 2010 was 299,000."

I finished my article the 300,000 number. Click through to the Examiner link above and see the number they used when they printed the piece. Or did a month go by while I was distracted ? :-)

It must have been some month, as well, because, the last I heard, the unemployment level was nearly 500,000. Did nearly 200,000 get jobs without my noticing ?Fergus O'Rourkehttp://www.irish-lawyer.comnoreply@blogger.com
